Back to the overview page

Quick info

This course covers the development of the archaeology in the Baltic Sea area from the first colonization phase during the Late pleistocene/early holocene up until the Bronze Age. Since the area is located inbetween two traditional cultural complexes, one covering the North Atlantic area and the northern part of Eastern Europe and Asia a Baltic Sea Area perspective is emphasised. Cultural traditions and possible networks as they are reflected in artifacts, technological traditions, economical strategies, burial practices etc will be discussed. Cultural theories and methods that can shed light on such issues will also be discussed. It is a full time course but all lectures will be concentrated to one week on Gotland.
