Wind Power Education
Global interest in wind power development has increased over the last
ten years, in Sweden of course and in other countries all over the world. Wind
power is an important component in the global energy balance, and the Energy
Technology department at Gotland University offers a contemporary education in
wind power for those who wish to develop professional competence in this
rapidly changing field of renewable energy.
The different education segments we currently offer include:
- A master's degree (MSc) in Wind Power Project Management (60 ECTS), which is a one year on-campus program.
- Individual netbased wind power courses in Swedish and English at the undergraduate level, each 7.5 ECTS. A netbased bachelor degree (BSc) program of 180 ECTS is under development and presently anticipated to open with the 2013 fall term. Additional information will be posted at this site.
- Commissioned courses for
vocational
education, companies and authorities are additional segments of the total
education offering.
Wind power learning environment at Gotland University:
Since wind energy utilization began, different ways of implementing the
technology have been executed on Gotland. This has given Gotland a significant
knowledge data base on wind power, and in concert Gotland University has offered
courses in wind power since 1998.
Wind resources on Gotland are extremely good, and as the development of the
commercial horizontal axis wind turbines began in Sweden there were
corresponding installations of wind turbines on the island. Today, in 2011,
there are about 160 first and second generation wind turbines on line, supplying
approximately 25% of the island’s electricity consumption.
The national planning target in Sweden for energy production from wind power
has been increased to a goal of up to 30 TWh by the year of 2020. By the same
date Sweden must achieve its designated EU target of 49% renewable energy in the
national energy grid, with a contribution of about 2.5 Twh from Gotland.
